Let me start with what I do for a living. I manage procurement for a 16-person metal fabrication shop, and I have kept an order-by-order cost log for over six years. Our equipment budget is roughly $210,000 a year. That number matters because in late 2024 I found myself comparing things that should not be compared: a DeWalt plasma cutter and Bodor laser equipment.
If you have ever stood on a shop floor with a $2,000 plasma cutter in one corner and a laser tube cutting machine quote on your desk, you know the real question is not which one cuts faster. The real question is which one makes the next profit-bearing part cheaper after all the hidden costs are included.
Why I Started With Two Machines That Are Not the Same
Plasma is manual cutting. A fiber laser platform is a different production method. In our case, the Bodor option included a Bodor laser tube cutting machine and a handheld fiber laser welding machine. Those are different animals, but they ended up in the same ROI spreadsheet because both were competing for money we were already sending to outside fabricators.

- Our actual part mix: sheet, plate, and a heavy amount of tube.

Dimension 1: Sticker Price vs. The Invoice That Is Already Leaving
Nothing prepares you for the difference in list price. A DeWalt plasma cutter is the kind of machine a shop owner can put on a company credit card. The Bodor laser tube cutting machine quote is a capital expense approval. If you stop counting there, the plasma cutter wins on price alone.
But the line item that bothered me was our outside processing account. During the first three quarters of 2024, we paid outside shops $36,400 for laser-cut tube and sheet. The previous year was $47,100. A lot of that work was not exotic. It was table legs, rack channels, gussets, and brackets. We sent it out because we did not have the right cutting capability in-house.

I nearly let this become the center of the analysis because it is the easiest way to compare apples to apples. That was almost a costly error.
One failure from our own records changed my approach. In 2023 I knew the compressed air dryer was not running well before a production run. I thought, what are the odds? Then moisture got into the air line, and by the time we noticed, 16 parts had bad edge quality. The rework cost $1,940 after overtime. The fix would have taken about two hours and roughly $140 in parts. That mistake had nothing to do with whether the machine was made by DeWalt or Bodor. It taught me that consumables are line-item distractions. The real cost is process failure, downtime, and the labor of redoing something that should have been right the first time.
Dimension 3: A Real Tube Cutting Part Changed My Math
The most useful comparison came from a real part: 2x2 square tube, 0.120-inch wall, about 19 inches long, with a 45-degree miter, two holes, and one slot. Our best plasma operator could make that part in an average of 4 minutes 40 seconds, including layout and cleanup. At our shop burden rate of $68 per hour, that is $5.29 per part in direct labor.
During a Bodor demo, the same features were cut in a 35-second machine cycle. I did not count the demo as the whole story. I used 70 seconds of operator time to account for loading the tube, removing the part, and checking it. At the same burden rate, that is $1.32 per part. The labor gap alone was about $3.97 per part. On 2,000 parts in one product family, that is roughly $8,000 per year before counting reduced grinding and fitting time.
That part was a repeat job. If we were cutting random one-off angles from dirty plate, I would not expect that result. But repeat tube jobs were exactly the work our outside vendors were doing for us. That is why the comparison must include your real mix, not a marketing cut chart.
Dimension 4: Fiber Laser Brazing and the Handheld Welder Complicated the Conclusion
Here is where I almost threw out my original comparison model. The Bodor handheld fiber laser welding machine I evaluated came with a wire feeder. That configuration opens the door to fiber laser brazing, which is not the same thing as saying it is a better arc welder.
Fiber laser brazing uses a laser to melt filler wire and create a low-distortion, smooth-looking joint. It matters for thin stainless steel and galvanized parts because the heat input is more controlled. In one of our stainless enclosure quotes, the customer rejected any visible weld spatter. We estimated that TIG would require extensive cleanup. A fiber laser brazing pass on the corner could leave a much cleaner seam. That was not a plasma cutter job. It was not even a tube cutting job. It was another reason to think of laser equipment as a capability package rather than a replacement for an existing tool.
But let me be careful about the boundary. A DeWalt plasma cutter is still the right tool for thick, rusty, dirty plate and field work. A fiber laser welding machine is not a magic stick that should replace every grinding wheel in the shop. The Bodor application engineers did not push it for heavy structural welding, and that honesty mattered. The vendor who tells you when their machine is the wrong tool is the vendor I trust when they say it is the right one.
What I Would Tell a Friend: Bodor Laser vs. DeWalt Plasma
If you ask me for a universal winner, I do not have one. I have a decision filter instead.
- Keep the DeWalt plasma cutter if your work is random repair, heavy plate, field work, or very low-volume cutting. Its greatest advantage is that it is paid for and portable.
- Look seriously at the Bodor laser tube cutting machine if you already pay outside shops to cut repeating tube and pipe parts. Track those invoices for three months before you call sales. That is the budget that will fund the machine.
- Add a Bodor handheld fiber laser welding machine only if you have enough thin-gauge, stainless, or galvanized joining work to keep it running steadily. Include training in the price. A new process without training is a new way to make expensive scrap.
The surprising conclusion from our spreadsheet was that plasma still belongs in our shop. We kept the plasma cutter even while we were evaluating a fiber laser system. The two are not enemies. Plasma is for the jobs that are not worth programming. The laser is for the jobs that are too expensive to keep touching by hand.

Machine pricing changes quickly. The comparison I ran used December 2024 quotes and January 2025 lead times. If you call Bodor Laser USA, ask for current pricing, installation details, training commitments, and service response times. Put every assumption in writing.
Most buyers focus on the monthly payment and completely miss the cost of scrap, rework, and outsourced parts that they are already paying for. The question is not whether Bodor is better than DeWalt. The question is whether your shop has enough of the right work to make the bigger investment the cheaper option over the next three to five years. That is the calculation that matters.
